There are many biographies of Vivien Leigh, the legend, who at age twenty-five crossed the Atlantic and walked off with the coveted role of Scarlett OHara in Gone with the Wind. This biography by Hugo Vickers, written in 1988 and updated and re-released in 2008, tells the story of Vivien Leigh, the woman. Examining the previously uncovered story of Vivien Leighs family, Vickers gives the first clear account of the atmosphere in which Vivien was raised. He covers her marriage to Leigh Holman and their abiding friendship, and then her marriage to Laurence Oliver, made the more difficult by her recurring bouts of tuberculosis and manic depression. In this loving account, Leigh emerges as a spirited and courageous woman, brave to the end.

I would like to update the Vivien Leigh fan base with the following information. As you may already know, Hugo Vickers has been actively working on revising his previous published Vivien Leigh biography. Indigo Publishing is the American publisher he’s been working with on this project. I contacted Indigo today to get a status report on the book’s progress (the last time I got a status update was back in November 2007).  The publisher kindly responded immediately with some fantastic news: “Just got the author’s revisions in the middle of last week . . .   Hopefully, if all goes well now, the book will finally become reality in the next month or two.  Hugo has made a lot of changes, and updates which all have to be put in by hand, which we are doing now.” Keep your fingers crossed and check back for more information as I receive it!

A frequent question I get asked is: ‘what is the best Vivien Leigh biography?’ I usually respond, ‘what kinda of story are you looking for?’ A quick, concise read? How about an eloquent,  reads-like-a-novel book? Maybe you’re looking for what others had to say about Vivien? Or perhaps you just want the hard facts and nothing else. Oh, and what about the pictures? I’m a Vivien Leigh book junkie and I enjoy collecting them so you’ve come to the right person.

In light of the recent biography news (Indigo, Michelle Morgan etc), I’ve decided to revamp my book section on vivien-leigh.com. Check out the new page HERE. Meanwhile, if I had to recommend a biography, here’s what I say:

Best Concise Bio: Molt’s Vivien Leigh: A Bio-Bibliography

Best Eloquent, reads-like-a-novel Bio: Robyns’s Light of a Star

Best through-the eyes-of her friends Bio: Dent’s Vivien Leigh: A Bouquet

Best hard-facts only Bio: Vicker’s Vivien Leigh

Best Pictures Bio: Taylor’s Vivien Leigh
